Lasting Power of Attorney
If you want someone to look after your affairs for a long period of time, you can give them a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA).
- you can make a LPA which looks after your health and care decisions and one to look after your property and financial affairs
- a LPA must be registered before it can be used
- a LPA lets you choose people to look after your affairs if you lose mental capacity
Do I need to make a lasting power of attorney
Anyone can make a LPA in case they ever lose mental capacity. However, you should think about whether you need a LPA if you have been diagnosed with an illness which might prevent you from making decisions in the future.
